The Arch Street Tavern's concept was conceived on a premise as old as Hartford itself - that people need an alternative. A place with a relaxed and personable atmosphere where the customer is offered a variety of quality food and drink. The Tavern will always strive for these ideals. Arch Street Tavern - Hartford's historical, rustic restaurant  Arch Street Tavern is located in the heart of Hartford's original center. In the 1600's the original residents settled at the junction of the Great River (Connecticut River) and the Little River (today the Whitehead Highway).
Columbus Blvd. (Front St.) and Arch St. (School St.) were among the earliest streets in Hartford for it is known that the Rev. Thomas Hooker resided on Arch St. (very near the Tavern's present site) along with many other of Hartford's leading citizens.
In those days the Little River served as a watery highway on which barges ferried supplies to the heard of the young city.
About 1895 the Hartford Brick Carriage Factory, which is the Arch Street Tavern today, was built, and it manufactured buggies and carriages, contributing to Hartford's then booming economy, until the automobile caused its demise some 20 years later.
Today the homes that lined Arch St. are gone along with the Little River and the carriages; but their memory lives on here at the Tavern.
